Extra Curricular Activities

Sports

Students can avail of training by staff and qualified coaches in many sports, including but not limited to Soccer, Gaelic Football, Kick boxing, Basketball, and Athletics.

Our school teams participate in all the local school competitions and continue to beat the competition time and time again.

Our GAA teams take part in blitzes throughout the year, namely Cumann na mBunscol, Mini 7s and other locally ran blitzes.
The school is very proud of its GAA history, with many county titles to our name. We have had many past pupils representing Galway. Most recently, past pupil James Egan’s Galway football team won the 2022 Connacht Championship and reached the All-Ireland football final.
In addition to coaching provided by teachers after school, we are also part of Fr. Griffin’s/Éire Óg school’s coaching programme. Weekly coaching takes place in the school yard throughout the year for all classes

Music

Our music room is stocked full of brass instruments, violins, drums, percussion instruments and ukuleles.

Alongside curricular music education where children are taught to read, write and play musical instruments, we are lucky to have Mr Conboy and Mr Gleeson on staff. Here, children can attend weekly school band lessons learning their favourite songs in a fun and relaxed environment. Our band also get regular opportunities to perform at whole school events and charity fund raisers on Shop Street.

St. Pat’s Choir are guided by enthusiastic, experienced staff members.

Every year, the choir gather to practice melodies and harmonies across a wide variety of musical genres. Many hours of training is put in before their performances at school events, concerts and ceremonies for religious sacraments, as well as events outside of school and singing  for charity on Shop Street!

Every year, our children perform a Christmas Concert for their parents and sometimes for the whole school.

Debating

There is a strong tradition of debating in St. Pat’s. We have won numerous county and regional championships.

Each member of sixth class takes part in the preparation. Children are put into teams of three, assigned a debating motion and compete against an opposing team. After a lot of practice and expert advice from the teachers, the children perform their debate in front of the whole school. The pupils feel a great sense of pride, achievement confidence and a boost in self-esteem after performing their debate in front of such a large audience.

The teachers then choose the top six debaters for the School Debating Team consisting of three first team members and three subs.
The whole school learns the skills of debating from the sixth classes and they really enjoying listening to their arguments.

Chess

Chess is one of the most popular after school clubs in St. Pat’s, and it’s no surprise that places in this club fill up quickly.

Under the guidance and watchful eye of their coach Brendan of the Galway Chess Academy, the pupils receive the very best guidance and instruction. Many of our pupils represent the school in competition throughout the year.

There was a notable achievement for one of our pupils, Lorcan Heron, who represented Ireland at the European U13 Chess Championships held at the University of Limerick in June 2024.

Gardening

The learning does not end at the classroom door in St. Pat’s and our talented gardening team has proven that!

We grow a wide variety of plants, fruits and vegetables every year in our beautiful award winning garden, awash with colour in the Spring and Summer.

Children use the garden to relax, read, play their musical instruments and of course take care of our garden plants.
